Warts on the sole of the foot are called plantar warts and can be quite painful. Like other warts, they are caused by a virus that invades the skin through small cuts or abrasions. They are often contracted by walking barefoot on dirty surfaces where the virus resides. As viruses thrive in warm, moist environments, public bathing facilities are a common place where plantar warts spread.

Although mostly harmless, plantar warts in particular can become quite painful. Unlike other warts, plantar warts tend to be hard and flat but will have a rough surface, well-defined boundaries and a center that appears to have one or more black pinpoints.

Home treatment is not recommended as over-the-counter treatments often destroy both healthy and affected skin cells. Home treatment can also take a long time, increasing the chance of spreading the virus.

Call a podiatrist if you suspect you may have a plantar wart to discuss treatment options.
