A fifth metatarsal fracture is a common foot injury in which the bone on the outside of your foot just below the little toe breaks. This injury can happen when you step on something hard or wear shoes that don’t fit properly. Injuries to this bone are common and sometimes happen without any contact or hard impact.

The most common symptoms of a fifth metatarsal fracture include pain and swelling in the foot, difficulty walking, bruising or discoloration near the injured area, and deformity or instability of the injured area. If you suspect you might have a fifth metatarsal fracture, see a doctor as soon as possible for an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.
